Vicente Rocafuerte (Ecuador 1783-1847) was the President of Ecuador from 1834 to 1839 and an influential figure in Ecuadorian politics. He is known for establishing Ecuador’s public school system, passing a new Constitution, and for giving greater protections to Native Americans in Ecuador. The bronze bust is by Qual Amadeus Qualacio Collmann. A plaque on its plinth quotes Roacfuerte:
“The education of the masses strengthens liberty and eradicates slavery.”
