The Lyndon B. Johnson Monument was formally dedicated to the City of Houston on August 6, 2021, a date chosen to commemorate the signing of the Voting Rights Act. It is located in Little Tranquility Park near City Hall. It comprises a portrait sculpture and six separate works that educate the public about the significant contributions of our nation’s 36th President, including voting rights and immigration. In attendance were Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, LBJ’s daughters, Luci Baines Johnson and Lynda Bird Johnson Robb, Ambassador Hushang Ansary and Shahla Ansary, and Charles Foster and David Jones, who spearheaded the effort to make the project possible. Vice President Kamala Harris joined the ceremony with a special video dedication. The LBJ Monument links to the George HW Bush Monument and the James Baker Monument, all of which were designed by the artist Chas Fagan. Fagan is known for painting oil portraits of all the US Presidents on commission from the White House Historical Association and C-SPAN. He also is the sculptor of the President Abraham Lincoln Monument, at the Union League Club in New York, and The President Ronald Reagan Monument in the US Capital Rotunda in Washington, DC, among many others.
