Created in 1969, the abstract sculpture Large Spindle Piece by Henry Moore was originally given to the City of Houston by the Knox Foundation, in 1979. It had been intended for installation in Tranquility Park. When the artist saw the site in person, he argued for a better space, one with more horizontal availability, and a grassy expanse in Buffalo Bayou Park was chosen. Cast in bronze, Large Spindle Piece is mounted on a circular concrete based painted matte brown. Its curves, points, and edges were inspired by Michelangelo’s fresco, The Creation of Adam. Moore’s semi-abstract sculptures often feature curved forms in three-dimensional space, frequently with a notable void. By the end of his career, Moore was the most successful living artist at auction.
