Jose Julian Marti Perez (1853-1895) was a Cuban intellectual and writer who spent much of his life pushing the cause of independence for Cuba from Spain, as well as the need to prevent American expansionism into the island. He died in battle in 1895, and his death became a rallying point for Cuban independence. The monument Jose Marti Bust features a bronze bust on a granite pedestal, the work of Cuban artist Tony Lopez, whose artworks can be found in important collections across America, and especially in Miami. Lopez was known for his indefatigable vitality and love of his work. He kept his studio doors open for anyone who wanted to talk about art and the history of Cuba.
