The Houston Zoo has been home to a life-sized representation of an African elephant since 1982. Donated by Isabell and Max Herzstein, African Elephant was originally placed at the main entrance. In 2000, it was relocated to the Cambridge Street entrance, at which time it was restored. The lifelike COR-TEN sculpture appears to be in motion, with one leg and its trunk raised up. Artist Robert Fowler lived and worked in Houston. His sculptures can be seen in important public and private collections, and have been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.
